Teacher: Erika Gabela
Subject: Science
Grades: 8
School: ESMT IS190X
Location: New York, NY

Quote from the Teacher: "I am learning so much on what New York City does to make a difference in the environment. There are just so many ways my students and I can do volunteer field trips throughout the year.... I am very excited. It will have a huge impact on the science instruction in my school."

Overview: ESMT IS 190 teacher Erika Gabela chose to focus her Charity Checks lesson on environmental issues. She used news clips to highlight several environmental issues. Students then worked in teams to research related charities using brochures and websites. After choosing their charities, the students made posters and gave a 3-minute presentation to the class based on their research. Each student then wrote a business letter and created a piece of art to accompany the Charity Check to their chosen charity.
